Undefeated LaSalle Institute, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, Troy, Hoosick Falls, and Chatham head the lineup for the 2009 Section 2 football playoff schedule, which was announced Sunday.
Top seeds are LaSalle (7-0) and Saratoga Springs (6-1) in Class AA; Burnt Hills (7-0) and Troy (7-0) in Class A; Lansingburgh (6-1) and Schalmont (5-2) in Class B; Hoosick Falls (7-0) and Chatham (7-0) in Class C; and Rensselaer (6-1) in Class D.
Quarterfinal action will held Friday and Saturday, with the semifinals next weekend, and the championships November 6-7. The semifinals will be held at the home site of the higher seeds in all classes, except Class C, which will play its semifinals at Stillwater. The championships will be played at Colonie (Class AA), Shenendehowa (A), and Glens Falls (D), with the Class B and C sites to be determined.
Teams not qualifying for the sectional playoffs will compete in crossover games, along with Rensselaer and Greenwich, which received Class D byes.

Times Union: Defense carries the night
Chalk this victory up to the Blue Streak defense. With its offensive unit putting just enough points on the scoreboard, it was the grit and mettle displayed by the Saratoga Springs defenders that sealed a stirring 17-14 win over Empire Division rival Ballston Spa Friday night.

Times Union: Colonie takes 'Cup'
On a night when Shaker proved more prolific on offense, the Colonie High football team came through with some superlative defense Friday to seize momentum and win. A pair of fourth-down stops, including one on fourth-and-goal, kept the Garnet Raiders in the lead and an interception in the end zone by Nick DeFlorio in the waning seconds provided Colonie with a riveting 27-19 victory over the Blue Bison in the annual Town of Colonie Cup game.

Times Union: Power runs lift Knights
Maybe it's the way he wears his shoulder pads, or perhaps it's the ferocity with which he runs. Either way, Lansingburgh senior wingback Tyrone Nichols appears bigger than his 6-foot-1, 200-pound frame. On Saturday afternoon, with his squad in need of a powerful lift, there was Nichols, flexing his muscles by dragging Albany Academy defenders everywhere.

Times Union: Niskayuna earns playoff bid
Ryan Alden is lightening-quick when it comes to directing praise for his teammates and the Niskayuna High football team's coaching staff. But when it was all said and done Friday night, Alden clearly deserved the most accolades for his tremendous all-around performance against Bishop Maginn.
