SYRACUSE DEFENSE BRACES FOR FORMER ALBANY ACADEMY STANDOUT DION LEWIS OF PITTSBURGH |
|
Friday, 06 November 2009 |
Pitt freshman tailback Dion Lewis was all smiles after the Panthers' 41-14 win over South Florida on Oct. 24.Syracuse, NY -- University of Pittsburgh tailback Dion Lewis is a leading contender for college freshman of the year. Lewis has rushed for 1,065 yards and 11 touchdowns this season for the 14th ranked Panthers. He ranks No. 1 in the Big East in rushing and scoring. And here's the kicker - he's from Albany.
Lewis played at Albany Academy his sophomore year in 2006. His team got to the New York state championship game at the Carrier Dome, where it lost to Geneva in the Class B finals 33-7. Lewis scored his team's only touchdown on a 1-yard run. For the next two years, Lewis played at Blair Academy in New Jersey. His recruiting options were limited to Tulane and Miami of Ohio until Pittsburgh came in.
Lewis, who enrolled early at Pittsburgh last January, was asked this week if he was recruited by Syracuse. He said no.
Syracuse has one of the top rushing defenses in the country. The Orange rank seventh nationally, giving up 88 yards on the ground per game. Lewis presents the same kind of challenge the Orange faced earlier this year when it went up against Noel Devine of West Virginia.
"Dion Lewis is a heck of a back," said Syracuse middle linebacker Derrell Smith. "True freshman I believe, too. He's done a tremendous job coming in for LeSean McCoy. Probably one of the best backs in the country. Most likely, one of the best backs we'll face this year. He's quick, fast."
How is Lewis different from Devine, who gained 91 yards on 22 attempts in a 34-13 victory over the Orange on Oct. 10?
"Noel Devine is more of a straight-line/speed ... like he hits the hole fast," Smith said. "Where as this one, he can hit the hole fast and he has a little shimmy to him (Smith did a little shimmy with his body as he said that). We put the right people in the right positions in practice so we can prepare well for this week."
Smith said watching film, Lewis has the wiggle to make lots of defenders miss tackles.
"He does. Yeah. That's what I mean by shimmy," Smith said. "He makes a lot of people miss. That's one of his best characteristics. He's very good at making people miss." |
